About Us

30 Years of Publishing

“Welsh Football” was founded in 1991 by football enthusiasts who believed Wales should have its own dedicated football publication. At the time, the first national League of Wales was about to be formed and there was a growing awareness of the value of our status as an independent nation within UEFA and FIFA.

The first issue appeared in January 1992 and the magazine has been published continuously since that time, reaching its 250th edition in December 2023.

The magazine aims above all to celebrate and communicate the joys of watching football in our small country’s many varied, scenic and welcoming venues. We offer a positive, but independent, view of football in Wales: never negative or controversial for the sake of it – but also prepared to be critical when necessary in the interests of the game.

In addition, by recording and commenting on all domestic football competitions, we are providing a permanent reference source on the game in Wales.

Welsh Football Magazine Today

We believe strongly in the lasting value of independent print publications and the magazine is available only in hard-copy format, published eight times each season from August to June.

The first (August) issue of every season is a comprehensive guide and preview, and the last issue of the season in June is a complete review of the domestic season.

We cover every level and every aspect of senior football, in every geographical region of Wales. Most issues contain news and views on the Wales national team and the major Welsh domestic league competitions. Other contents include: club features; a regional round-up of grassroots competitions in every issue; historical articles; programme reviews; book reviews; and a separate data supplement containing latest league tables and cup draws and results.
The magazine aims for high standards of professionalism in content and production, but is operated on a ‘fanzine’ basis – no contributor takes any payment, other than the professional designers and printers we commission.

“Welsh Football” relies heavily for its funding on subscriptions, sales through booksellers and clubs, and on the support of our major sponsors and advertisers, including Cherry Red Records and Harris Printers of Porthcawl who have helped to develop the magazine to its current standard.
